Contact Info
- Office: Research Hall 473 (you’ll have to go through door 470, the door to the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media; my door is the one you see when you enter that door)–but I won’t be there the rest of the semester!
- Office hours: By appointment; schedule one here
- If you want to talk to me in a video chat, schedule an appointment here. If you want to talk to me via Slack, you can still schedule an appointment here and I’ll make sure I’m available.
I want you to keep in contact with me and your classmates this semester. You can do this in several ways.
Slack
You must join the class’s Slack group. We’ll use this space to talk to each other, troubleshoot tech problems, and make on-the-fly adjustments to the course plan. You can contact me there via DM, but generally speaking if you have a question about the syllabus or assignment, you’re not the only one. So unless you’re asking me a question about specific personal needs, post in the public channels. That way everyone can get the benefits of my answer. You may also find that your classmates can be more helpful than the instructor!
Slack is open on my computer and phone 24 hours a day (I just never close it). That doesn’t mean that I’m available 24 hours per day to answer questions. Particularly in the evenings and weekends, I will get back to you within 24 hours, but I can’t guarantee faster responses than that.
You are always welcome to email me at amullen2@gmu.edu. As with Slack, please give me 24 hours to respond to any emails. You may also find this article from Teen Vogue about proper relationships with your professors useful.
Office hours
[Edit to add: All these things are still true even for virtual office hours!] You are always welcome to come see me during office hours. For the sake of both you and me, please schedule a time using the link above. Office hours are for you to come to me with questions too long to answer in Slack or email. It’s also your time to talk to me about general concerns, whether about the class, your academic life, or something else. If you need something from me, like paperwork, office hours is the time to take care of that too. Want to know more about something we’ve talked about in class? Come see me! Want to know what other courses would be good to take after this one? Come see me! Office hours are for everyone, not just for those who are struggling.
If you can’t come to my office during my posted office hours, you can still come see me! Just drop me a line via email or Slack, and we’ll set up another time.
