Here are some things you’ll need to know no matter which one you choose:

Your project will consist of two parts contained in one blog post: the actual digital thing, and a reflection. The reflection should include answers to questions such as:

Why do you think this digital form is a good way to tell this historical story?

What are the disadvantages of telling a historical story this way?

How might you use this digital tool in your future career either as a student or as a professional?

You must use and cite both primary and secondary sources. You must cite at least 4 secondary sources and 4 primary sources. You must also include a bibliography at the end of your blog post.

Some sources are off-limits for the final project. They include:

Anything from History.com

Anything from Wikipedia

Anything from the Encyclopedia Britannica

You must cite at least one actual book and one journal article in your project. The rest of your citations are up to you.

You must cite your work using the Chicago Manual of Style (use Zotero to help you!).

Remember to cite your primary sources as well–look up how to cite them either on the website you get them from or the Chicago Manual of Style. You must include a URL in your citation.

You will have ONE chance at revision on this. It’s due on December 8; I will read them all on December 9, and then you’ll have one shot to revise by December 12.

OK, now to the specifics.

If you are going to expand Project 4

Project 4 is the timeline. You made a timeline of a particular part of the war before; now I want you to expand it in scope and depth. I want you to make a copy of the timeline spreadsheet you worked with before and then expand. Here’s what I mean:

You need to add at least 5 new events to your timeline–between the dates that you already have. So I don’t want you to add more events on the beginning and end, but rather in the middle.

You need to add an image to at least 7 of your events. MAKE SURE YOU CAPTION YOUR IMAGES WITH A PROPER CITATION. Use Tropy to your advantage!

As part of your reflection, explain why you chose the events that you did and whose perspective you’re prioritizing.

If you are going to expand Project 5

Project 5 is the StoryMap. You made a narrative map of a particular person in the war for that original StoryMap. Now I want you to create a new StoryMap of a person who intersected with your original person at some point (e.g., if you had done Ulysses S. Grant for your first StoryMap, you could do Robert E. Lee or William Tecumseh Sherman).

Your StoryMap should include between 7 and 20 events from the new person’s life (including one that shows a point of intersection with your original person).

At least 5 of your events should now include an image. MAKE SURE YOU CAPTION YOUR IMAGES WITH THE PROPER CITATION. Use Tropy to your advantage!

As part of your reflection, explain why you chose the person you did, and why the events you chose help us understand them better.

If you are going to expand Project 6

Project 6 is the podcast. You made a podcast of 8-10 minutes, telling the story of a particular event in your war. Now I want you to create a new podcast that tells me what happened after the event you talked about in your first episode.

Your podcast should be 8-10 minutes long.

It should include an introduction of you and your topic, as well as an ending. Make sure you connect this episode to your previous episode!

You should incorporate music or sound into your podcast in at least two places.

You should quote from at least 2 primary sources in your podcast, and acknowledge at least 2 scholars by name.

You need a bibliography with all the sources, including the one you mention by name, but also the ones you don’t.

As part of your reflection, explain why this story is a good one to tell via audio, and also what’s missing when you tell it in audio.

Your final project is going to be an expansion of one of your small projects 4, 5, or 6 (that’s timeline, StoryMap, or podcast).
