Each week will have its own page, which will have much more detail about our activities for the week, including the readings. But here’s the general structure.

Week 1 (January 25): Introduction to the course + sea power

Week 2 (February 1 and 3): American Revolution

Week 3 (February 8 and 10): Building the navy

Week 4 (February 15 and 17): Early naval wars

Week 5 (February 22 and 24): War of 1812

  • Annotated bibliography and idea for unessay due on Feb. 24

Week 6 (March 1 and 3): Professionalization and exploration

Week 7 (March 8 and 10): Civil War

  • Outline or plan for unessay due on March 10

Week 8 (March 15 and 17): Naval imperialism and the Spanish-American War

  • This week we’re taking Monday truly off. Think of it as a mini-spring break.

Week 9 (March 22 and 24): World War I

  • Self-assessment due March 24

Week 10 (March 29 and 31): Interwar

  • Book review due March 31

Week 11 (April 5 and 7): World War II

  • Final progress check for main project

Week 12 (April 12 and 14): Cold War

  • I hope we will have a Hunt for Red October viewing party sometime this week!

Week 13 (April 19 and 21): The War on Terror

  • Main project due on April 21

Week 14 (April 26): Wrap-up and celebration of achievements

  • End of semester reflection due on April 26
